An industrial facade is not undecorated by accident. Bay spacing, roof pitch and cladding rhythm follow the production process inside, form here genuinely does follow function.
The grid comes from the process, not the architect
In a residential or office project, the structural grid is usually set by the architect to suit spatial ambitions. In an industrial building, the grid is set first by the equipment and material flow, and the architect designs within it. Column spacing is dictated by crane spans, forklift aisle widths, and the turning radius of the largest vehicle that will use the building, not by proportion.
This is why two facilities in the same industry can look almost identical from the outside: if the process is the same, the bay spacing that process requires tends to converge on similar numbers, regardless of which architect designed each one.
Getting the grid wrong is expensive in a way office design rarely is. A column in the wrong place in an office is an inconvenience; a column in the wrong place on a production line can block a forklift path for the life of the building.
Roof pitch is a mechanical decision
A shallow roof pitch on an industrial shed is rarely an aesthetic choice; it is usually the cheapest slope that still sheds rain and snow load within the local building code, while keeping the roof structure light enough that it doesn't add cost to the columns and foundations below it.
Where a steeper pitch appears, there is almost always a mechanical reason: natural ventilation through a ridge vent, daylighting through a monitor roof, or a process that generates heat and needs it to rise and escape rather than pool under a flat deck.
Clients sometimes ask for a steeper pitch purely for street presence. That is a legitimate request, but it should be made explicitly, because it changes the structural sizing and the cost, it should not be assumed to come free with a taller-looking building.
Cladding rhythm follows the bay, and that's a feature
The repeating panel rhythm visible on most industrial facades is a direct expression of the structural bay spacing behind it, each panel module lines up with the columns because that keeps the cladding system simple, fast to install, and cheap to repair if a panel is damaged.
This repetition is often read as monotony, but it is what allows a large facility to be built and maintained economically. Breaking the rhythm for visual variety usually means custom panel sizes at the break points, which raises both the initial cost and the cost of every future repair at that spot.
Where we do introduce variation, we concentrate it at the entrances and the parts of the building the public actually sees from the road, and leave the repetitive bays alone, the same principle as spending on the surfaces a hand touches in an interior.
Natural light without breaking the envelope
Large expanses of glazing are expensive to heat, cool, and clean in an industrial setting, and every opening is a potential leak point in a building that needs to stay weathertight over decades of forklift traffic and vibration nearby. Daylighting is usually solved instead with translucent roof panels or a monitor roof, which bring in diffuse light across the working floor without the maintenance burden of wall-height glass.
This matters for worker wellbeing as much as for energy cost. Facilities with even, glare-free daylight across the working area consistently report fewer complaints and better task accuracy than those lit only by high-bay fixtures, even when the fixture-only option is technically brighter on paper.
Where office or amenity space sits inside an industrial shell, we treat that zone differently, full glazing there is appropriate, because it is not exposed to the same traffic and vibration as the production floor.
Reading a facility from the road
Once you know what to look for, an industrial facade tells you a fair amount about what happens inside it: tall, widely spaced bays with high eaves usually mean overhead cranes; a run of small, evenly spaced openings near roof level usually means natural ventilation for a process that generates heat; a cluster of loading doors on one elevation and none on the others tells you where the logistics yard sits.
None of this is decoration. It is the honest expression of a building solving a specific set of problems, and that honesty is itself an aesthetic, the same one that governs a minimal interior, applied at a larger scale and under harder constraints.
Clients who want their facility to also read as a considered piece of architecture, not just a shed, usually get the best result by accepting that discipline rather than fighting it: choosing cladding colour, entrance detailing, and signage carefully within the grid the process demands, rather than asking the building to look like something it isn't.
